Mallorca museums: the best museums and historic houses to visit

From Miró's studio above Cala Major to the monastery where Chopin spent a winter, Mallorca's museums are small, personal and set in remarkable buildings. Here are the ones we think are worth your morning.

Many of Mallorca's best museums are as much about the building as the collection.
in short

The short answer

Mallorca's best museums are mostly in Palma: Es Baluard for contemporary art in a Renaissance bastion, the Fundació Miró Mallorca where Joan Miró worked, the free Museu Fundación Juan March, Palau March, Bellver Castle and the cathedral. Beyond Palma, visit the Cartoixa de Valldemossa, Can Prunera in Sóller and Robert Graves's house in Deià.

Key takeaways

  • Palma has the island's strongest collection: Es Baluard, the Fundació Miró Mallorca, Palau March and the free Museu Fundación Juan March.
  • The cathedral is celebrating Gaudí Year in 2026, a century after the architect's death; he reshaped its interior in the early twentieth century.
  • The Royal Palace of La Almudaina reopened in summer 2026 after restoration works.
  • In the west, combine the Cartoixa de Valldemossa, Son Marroig and Robert Graves's house in Deià in one day.
  • Many museums close on Sundays or Mondays, and Graves's house opens on weekdays only: check before you go.

Mallorca's museums are not vast. Their strength is the setting: a Renaissance bastion over the sea, the studio where Joan Miró painted for almost three decades, a monk's cell in Valldemossa, a poet's house in Deià. The best of them are in Palma, and a second, quieter circuit runs along the west coast.

We started from the museum page of our print guide and checked each one again on its own website. Every museum below has a current programme or visiting hours on its own site; opening days change with the season, so confirm before you drive out.

Which are the best museums in Mallorca, area by area?

If you only have one day, spend it in Palma. If you have two, give the second to the west coast between Valldemossa and Sóller.

Which museums in Palma are worth visiting first?

Start with the cathedral and the art museums around the old town, then take a taxi up to Bellver and out to the Fundació Miró. Everything else is within a twenty minute walk.

La Seu and the Almudaina

Palma's Gothic cathedral is the island's great monument. Antoni Gaudí reshaped its interior in the early twentieth century, and in 2026, a hundred years after his death, the cathedral marks Gaudí Year. Miquel Barceló's ceramic chapel of Sant Pere shows the island's best known living artist on a monumental scale. The roof terraces reopen in spring. Opposite, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina reopened in summer 2026 with a new visitor route after restoration works.

Es Baluard, Juan March and Palau March

Es Baluard sits inside the Renaissance bastion at the end of the old city walls, and its outdoor sculpture terraces look straight over the harbour. The Museu Fundación Juan March, on Carrer de Sant Miquel, shows twentieth century Spanish art and is free. Palau March, beside the cathedral, holds modern sculpture, a noted collection of Mallorcan maps, an eighteenth century Neapolitan nativity scene and murals by Josep Maria Sert.

Fundació Miró Mallorca and Bellver Castle

Above Cala Major, the Fundació Miró Mallorca keeps the studios where Joan Miró worked from the 1950s, with a striking modern exhibition building beside them. The old Son Boter house is closed for restoration for now. Bellver Castle, the round Gothic castle in the pine woods above the city, houses Palma's history museum and gives the best view of the bay.

Which galleries in Palma show contemporary art right now?

Beyond the museums, Palma has a lively gallery scene, especially in the streets between the Born and the old town. These are the galleries and artists we work with.

Gerhardt Braun Gallery has made Carrer de Sant Feliu its own, with the Art Palace at number 10 and several more spaces along the same street, showing international contemporary painting and sculpture. Kiliart shows fine art photography of the Mediterranean, printed for contemporary interiors, from its gallery in Palma. For the full picture, see our art directory.

Which museums are worth the drive outside Palma?

The west coast has the best of them, all on one road. Drive from Valldemossa to Deià and on to Sóller and you pass three museums and a historic estate in under an hour.

  • Cartoixa de Valldemossa: the Carthusian monastery where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838 to 1839. Open Monday to Saturday; short piano recitals are part of the visit.
  • Son Marroig: the estate of Archduke Ludwig Salvator, the Austrian archduke who fell for this coast, with a small museum and a marble belvedere over the sea. Its gardens are the main stage of the Deià International Music Festival.
  • Ca n'Alluny, Robert Graves's house in Deià: the English poet's home, with his rooms, his garden restored to its 1930s planting and a short film. Open Monday to Friday only.
  • Can Prunera in Sóller: an Art Nouveau town house with its period furniture and the Serra collection, with works by Miró, Picasso, Klimt and Barceló among others.

In the southwest, CCA Andratx has shown contemporary art since 2001 and runs studios for visiting artists. In the east, the Fundación Bartolomé March opens the sculpture gardens of Sa Torre Cega in Cala Ratjada for guided visits on weekday mornings, booked online. Our Serra de Tramuntana guide has the rest of the west coast day.

In the north, look out for Joan Bennàssar's work in the open air: the Mallorcan painter and sculptor has a permanent sculpture route in Can Picafort, Son Serra de Marina and Santa Margalida.

How do you plan a museum day in Mallorca?

  1. Check opening days first: many museums close on Sundays, Mondays or holidays, and winter hours start in November.
  2. Book where you can. Sa Torre Cega is by guided visit only, and the cathedral sells tickets online.
  3. Pair museums by area: the cathedral, Almudaina and Palau March sit side by side; Valldemossa, Son Marroig and Deià share one road.
  4. Leave time for lunch. Our restaurant guide lists the tables we recommend near the old town, and our hotels include several within walking distance of the cathedral.
  5. Come back in the evening. Several of these places become concert venues in summer; see our guide to concerts and music festivals in Mallorca.

Our print guide described Mallorca's museums as a great variety of interesting places, and that undersells them. Choose two or three, give each the time it deserves, and you will see an island that most beach holidays miss.
