A gourmet tour
If you like wine you must visit one of the bodegas in Mallorca. Most open it´s doors to the public for a wine tasting in Mallorca and walk around the cellars where they produce excellent wines. The history of wine in Mallorca goes back to 123 bc when the Romans integrated Mallorca into their empire. They started to cultivate wine and soon it was the industry´s leading export product. But, as it happened in all countries in Europe a little bit earlier, in 1891-1895 the grape phylloxera destroyed most of the vine and farmer´s started to cultivate almonds instead. Means, everywhere you see the almond blossom in February had been vineyards until the end of the 19th century.
At the beginning of the 90s of last century, farmers started rethinking and cultivating high quality wine again. Today, Mallorca produced excellent, international awarded wines. The biggest producer region is located between Palma and Inca.
