The northern part of our beautiful island is certainly one of its most charming and pristine areas. The community of Pollença comprises over 151 km2 including Pollença, Port de Pollença, Cala Sant Vicenç and the peninsula of Formentor. I have always felt like I am in another world. This fascinating region is impressive due to its wild and raw beauty. Here the Tramuntana mountain range, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, forms its final foothills with the Cap de Formentor with fantastic views over dizzying cliffs and the open sea. Long beaches with crystal clear waters invite you to practice all kinds of water sports while unusual mountainous terrain and nature parks provide some exciting hiking – perfect too for nordic walking. The cultural events on offer are also interesting, one of them being the Festival de Música Clásica de Pollença.
It is worth spending time walking through the alleys of the historic centre of Pollença, following in the footsteps of the Knights Templer, climbing the 365 steps of Calvary and, up there by the small chapel, catching a magnificent view of the town and countryside. Worth seeing: the Plaça Mayor, the Museo de Pollença, the 14th century Sanctuary of Puig de María, the Sant Domingo Convent, the Pont Roma and the impressive procession of Davallament on Good Friday.
On your way to Cap Formentor, be sure to stop by Teixits Vicens. Teixits Vicens has been a family business for 160 years and is considered the place to shop for the colourful, double-sided woven fabrics with the beautiful “Robes des Llengües”, the tongue-like pattern that stands for Majorcan tradition and timeless design. There you will find an explosion of colours, a room full of wonderful items all evoking that special Mediterranean feel!
The way to Cap Formentor is signposted from here on. If you are lucky, you will catch a glimpse of one of the goats grazing on the steep slopes. From the observation area and the Albercuix watchtower on the other side, you will have a fantastic view over the bay of Formentor out to sea.
Very impressive and not to be missed!
