A long tradition on a new road to success
Wine has been cultivated on Majorca for many centuries but only since the 1990s has this long tradition, which came to Majorca with the Romans, been on a sustainable path to success. Already in the 1st century BC they were comparing Majorcan wines with the finest wines from Italy. After the Christian recapture of the island in 1229 led by Jaume I and the end to the Moorish ban on alcohol, this reputation increased and lasted until the 17th century. Then along came common phylloxera completely destroying all the vines. Thus, it was not until the 1990s that the traditional culture of Majorcan winegrowing was revived, with some innovative winemakers recalling grape varieties, good soil and the excellent climate for winegrowing. Majorcan varieties regained their popularity after many years of hard work, ups and downs and a great passion for cultivating fine wines. Their constantly improving quality is earning them an increasingly good reputation among connoisseurs and wine lovers from all over the world and this has resulted in multiple awards at international wine fairs.
There are currently around 70 vineyards on Majorca, spread out all over the island. Most bodegas are found in the centre of the island, in the north and in the east of Majorca. They are producing the so-called wines from the “Pla i Llevant”. The “Vi de la Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord” is cultivated in Majorca’s northwest between the Cap de Formentor and Andratx, on high, chalky soil. Among other wines, it is here where the popular “Malvasía” is made. Since 2003, all wines from Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentor carry the quality seal, “Vi de la Terra Illes Balears”. Enjoy tasting wines made from the indigenous varieties Manto Negro, Callet and Prensal Blanc – to name just a few of the island’s approximately 40 typical grapes.
A well-known wine route with guided tours leads through the “Denominación de Origen” (D.O.) Binissalem with 14 participating vineyards from Santa María del Camí, Consell, Binissalem, Sencelles and Santa Eugenia. Less commercialised are the Mallorcan Wine Tours as they introduce you to the history and production of Majorcan wines. These also include a guided tour through the vineyards and visits to two of Majorca’s oldest wine-growing estates with wine tastings paired with typical regional specialities.
