There are places where you don´t need to decide between simple tapas with a glass of wine and fine cuisine. Restaurant Tirso in Palma de Mallorca is one of these places. Since already one year, chef and co-owner Carlos welcomes his guests with fine cuisine a la carte, a changing menu but also delicious tapas.

By the way, „tirso“ is the spoon of the water god Neptun and logo of the restaurant which is perfectly located right at the corner to Plaza Mercat, between Borne and Ramblas. An eyecatcher of Restaurant Tirso is the open kitchen which allows its guests to follow the kitchen team´s work but also to be close to chef Carlos Abad Landeras for a short chat with the expert about cooking tips for home. The lower part of the restaurant in Palma is an open bar concept with high chairs and tables, sitting next to the kitchen. Those clients looking for an exclusive restaurant atmosphere will be seated in the upper part.

The idea of combining tapas with fine cuisine is pretty simple: most people just step in because of the delicious tapas presented at the bar next to the entrance. Once they sit down and have a look to the menu they will notice the excellent dishes and changing menus and might come back for a fine dinner or just change their mind from tapas to a la carte.

I was invited to get known the excellent cuisine of Tirso by chef Carlos himself and took a seat next to the kitchen. Looking to the menu you will hardly decide between a small and a large degustation menu, a la carte dishes and tapas. My partner decided for the large 10 courses degustation menu (55 €) which is a selection of different courses from the menu card but in smaller portions, e.g. garlic soup, anchovis, pulpo, beef and truffles filled with goat cheese and jam. I went for the smoked salmon as a starter followed by Bacaloa with caramalized onions and red pepper foam (17,90 €). No need to mention that the presentation of the plates was extraordinary, traditional cuisine combined with modern elements. So as the anchovies which had been served on a sand stone brick and the Mallorcan sausage Camaiot from Sineu did not came with a simple bread but was cheeky combined with scallop and pea purree.

All courses had been served in a creative way, a fusion of traditional food with international touch and entertained by the team in the open kitchen. Any question to the chef? No prob! Carlos is always open to answer your questions between beef, fish and tapas.

After 3 hours of culinary highlights my opinion: Tirso is a perfect combination of fine tapas bar and high cuisine restaurant, traditional ingredients combined with new soul food and all at very fair prices right in the center of Palma de Mallorca. You definitely notice the international experience of chef Carlos and you will highly estimate the open kitchen. It´s an entertainment by itself to see the simple and professional way the kitchen team is preparing excellent food. Restaurant Tirso is the perfect place for an after shopping snack or an excellent dinner (from 7 pm), open for lunch as well (12.30 - 4 pm).

Next time, there is no need to decide between fine tapas & wine and fine cuisine. Just step in the restaurant Tirso and let your mood decide.
