Agapanto - Highlight of a visit in Soller

I love Soller – the mountains, the orange groves and the relaxed athmosphere! Soller is located on the wild west coast of Mallorca, set amid the highest peaks of the island. Most tourists only know the train connecting Palma with Soller (a great tour with a 100 years old train) but Soller is much more. The villages Soller, Fornalutx , Biniaraix and Puerto de Soller are called “the orange valley” thanks its thousands of lemon and orange trees. In winter time, climb up the mountains and in summer, walk through the shady alleys.

Or do as I did on Saturday. I spend the morning passing the farmer´s market (every Saturday until approx. 2 pm), getting fresh fruits and vegetables and eating the best ice cream in Mallorca at “Fet a Soller”. Fet a Soller is an ecological brand store offering local products grown in the orange valley, without using chemical additives. Find the delicious ice cream by following the tram rail to Puerto de Soller, only 200 meters from the main market.

The highlight of my Saturday tour has been a fantastic dinner at the restaurant Agapanto in Puerto de Soller. Agapanto is located on the left side reaching the harbor (follow signs Es Repic beach and light house), at the end of the beach with excellent views over harbor, mountains and sea.

Maria, since 6 years owner of the Restaurant Agapanto, gave me a very warm welcome as she does with all of her guests. She introduced me to the story behind which is interesting for food lovers: In order to serve fresh ingredients, Agapanto has an own vegetables garden, it´s own farm for fresh eggs and they do bake its own bread. So, all you get there is definitely made with love and seasonable vegetables. Agapanto has a small menu which stands out for it´s philosophy to serve only ecological fresh products. I ordered the menu (48 €) which changes every month and which will give you a culinaric overview of Agapanto´s kitchen.

I got seated at a lovely decorated table with fresh flowers from the garden and candles and of course with sea view.

After a fruity aperitif the kitchen´s greeting was black lentils with rabbit, going with the fresh baked bread, olive cream and olives from Soller. Maria recommended a Blanc de Blanc from Ribas as perfect wine for summer evenings as it was that Saturday. While enjoying the view another starter was served: a spice creamy carrot ginger soup.

Than, the menu started: Baked goat cheese with strawberries and salad. Followed by an excellent fruity Gazpacho. Langostinos had been the next to pamper my senses. All dishes professional presented as usual in high class restaurants. The main menu – you can always select between fish and meat – has been fresh fish with al dente vegetables. Maria is an exceptional host. She always takes care that her guests enjoy the evening.

At that time, my attention was not really given to the lovely beach bar with a bar keeper who knows about his job. Announcing the dessert, he recommended a 45 years old (!) brandy from Jerez de Frontera which comes excellent with the flavor of the caramel ice cream and crema catalana. Although, I usually do not drink whisky, sherry or brandy, this was an excellent recommendation: a brandy full of fruity flavor that comes excellent with the dessert. He really knows what he is taking about!

I need to confess, I stayed at Agapanto for 4 hours. Not because of slowly service but I loved the ambience and really enjoyed the food. On top, I had a look behind the scene and the bar keeper introduced me to his concept of cocktails made with local products. Did you know Mallorca has an own rum, gin and own coke? All mixed with and topped with ice cubes of fresh mint a perfect choice and the ending of a fantastic dinner at a place that knows how to pamper their guest´s senses.

Thank you, Maria! I will come back! Definitely, one of the best restaurants in Mallorca!
